Thalsevana Holiday Resort

The luxurious Thalsevana Holiday Resort in Kankesanthuarai was opened on 2 October 2010. The resort is owned and managed by the Sri Lankan Army. Thalsevana is the Sinhala for palmyra shade. The resort is on Tamil land.

Kankesanthuarai is in the heart of the Valikamam North High Security Zone. This HSZ was created in 1990 when the Sri Lankan military forcibly expelled ten's of thousands of residents from northern Valikamam without any compensation. Twenty years later the residents have still not been allowed to return to their homes despite the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War and despite the Supreme Court ordering the government/military to allow the residents to return home.  The residents aren't allowed to return but the Army is allowed to build luxurious resorts for Sinhalese tourists.

With the end of the civil war the Sri Lankan military has been busy appropriating Tamil land and building permanent structures such as forts, hotels, restaurants, shops and holiday resorts. These structures are owned and operated by the military, they employ Sinhalese and they serve Sinhalese tourists. The Tamils have no part in them, other than that they are the legitimate owners of the land.
