The Mannar Bridge and Causeway connecting Mannar Island to the rest of Sri Lanka was opened on 18 March 2010. The bridge was financed by a 2.5 billion grant aid from the Japanese Government.
The bridge replaces a temporary bridge that had been put up following the destruction of the original bridge in 1990.
